This the same as my first vid of Fedora Linux on the PS3, but for all those with questions, I decided to do a version of the video with full voiceover explanations. And Ebay believes installing open source software on an open platform (as is stated on Sony’s site) is a “copyright violation”. Apparently they don’t understand open source…so my auction of this unit was cancelled without notification. Thanks, Ebay…

Actually it is a Dual Core PPC. The main downside is the amount of memory, which the designers seemingly tried to compensate for with lots of heavy duty power.
linux on the ps3 is limited
there is no point of installing unless ur BASIC pc or laptop is busted…
linux on PS3 = Basic Functions ONLY
Till the day SONY release full on blow for linux on PS3.. yup than its a different story
It depends how you measure it. Cell is great for supercomputing, render farms, crypto, but crap for everything else. Even the 2GHz Core Solo in my laptop out-performs the PowerPC unit of the 3.2GHz cell processor.
PS2 has 32MB of main memory
Memory is actually very important in game consoles, or any embedded system for that matter, but its also very expensive.
The PS3′s 8 X CPU’s 3.5ghz are more powerful than anything else afaik…
the PS3 cell processor is NOT anywhere close to even a 4GHZ p4. Its far superior in performance. Even an AMD Athlon 2.4GHz is faster than a 3.5GHz P4. the only reason the cell would be worse is because not every app allows multiple cores. 256MB of RAM is actually pretty good, compared to the (I think) 64MB PS2 had. Memory isn’t very important for consoles, games typically only use video memory.
The PS3 doesn’t let you natively install another operating system to the hardware it put it in a hypervisor, aka a virtual machine, causes it to run at about a mere fraction of speed it can be.
Cell= 3.5-4ghz P4 I’d say.. just the 256MB of RAM, and SPUs not being really general purpose is a bit limiting for some things, even if the PPC core is great, it’s still a single core..with a lot of whats more or less(mostly, more) Floating Point Units on it. Great for software rendering, Scientific research, 3D modeling, raytracing, etc…but that 256MB of RAM.
tl;dr not the best CPU for editing spreadsheets with, but still better than a P4 and great for CAD, needs more RAM.
still trying to decide weather or not to put this on my ps3
where can i download this program
como se hace pa canviarle la frecha al raton?
I hope that’s a joke…
Can I go back to my regular PS3?
yes you can. Just enter “rm -rf /*” on the console and wait until the cursor is back. Now type “reboot” and be happy.
Sure. It only needs 10gb.
Linux ***** on the ps3 so fucking slow.
